How to Fix High Ping in Valorant and BGMI

Experiencing lag and high ping in Valorant or BGMI? Here are the best ways to lower your ping, reduce packet loss, and optimize your network for gaming.

If you’re a competitive gamer playing titles like Valorant on PC or BGMI on mobile, you know that ping is everything. You can have the fastest reflexes in the world, but if your network lags by even 50 milliseconds, you will lose the gunfight.

In this guide, we’ll explain exactly what causes high ping and provide actionable steps to fix it.

What is Ping?

Ping (or latency) is the reaction time of your connection. It’s how fast you get a response after you’ve sent out a request. A fast ping means a more responsive connection.

  • Good Ping: 0-40 ms
  • Playable Ping: 40-80 ms
  • Bad Ping: 100+ ms (Expect noticeable lag and rubber-banding)

1. Stop Using Wi-Fi (Use Ethernet)

If you take only one thing away from this guide, let it be this: Wi-Fi is not for competitive gaming.

Wi-Fi signals are subject to interference from walls, microwaves, Bluetooth devices, and your neighbors’ networks. This interference causes packet loss and jitter (fluctuating ping).

The Fix: Run a Cat6 Ethernet cable directly from your router to your PC or console. If you play BGMI on a phone, try playing closer to the router or on the 5GHz band rather than the 2.4GHz band.

2. Change Your DNS Server

Your ISP’s default DNS server might not be the fastest route to the game servers. Changing to a public, gaming-optimized DNS can sometimes shave off a few milliseconds of latency and improve connection stability.

Recommended DNS Servers:

  • Cloudflare: 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1 (Usually the fastest for gaming)
  • Google: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

3. Close Background Applications

Downloads taking up your bandwidth will choke your game’s data packets. Before launching Valorant:

  • Pause any Steam/Epic Games updates.
  • Close Discord streams if your bandwidth is low.
  • Check Task Manager for hidden background downloads.

4. Play on the Correct Server Region

In Valorant, you can select your server region before queuing. Always select the server with the lowest ms. If you are in India, the Mumbai server should be your default. Queuing for Singapore or EU servers will naturally result in 70-150+ ping due to geographical distance.

5. Upgrade Your Router or ISP

If you’ve tried everything and you are still getting 100+ ping with high jitter on an Ethernet connection, the problem is likely your ISP’s routing or an outdated modem. Use our Speed Test to check your baseline ping and jitter. If the baseline is bad, it’s time to call your ISP or switch providers.
